A Nigerian Senate panel, working on the review of the country’s 1999 constitution, has invited Ghana’s electoral chief, Dr. Kwado Afari-Gyan, to a retreat being organised by the panel 8-9 October in the northern city of Kaduna.
But the local press reported Monday that the Nigerian electoral chief, Prof. Maurice Iwu, had not been invited to the retreat, calling the action a vote of no confidence on him.
The clamour for a review of the Nigerian constitution and the Electoral Act has increased after the 2007 elections, widely believed to be the worst in the count r y.
Prof. Iwu, who organised the polls, has come under fire, with many calling on him to step down or be fired.
He has, however, deflected the criticisms, claiming instead to have staged the b est election in the country’s history.
During the retreat, Dr. Afari-Gyan, who has organised three successful elections in his 11-year tenure, is expected to present a paper on “Designing electoral laws for effective election management: Global and regional perspectives.”
