Annin Seeks Appointment To Resolve Bawku Crisis

By on Monday, 2nd November 2009

Security expert Emmanuel Annin says he is the answer to the Bawku crisis which appears to be an albatross on the country’s neck.

“We are just jokers. That as a nation we don’t take anything serious. We wait for an outbreak of crisis before we scream and shout. When that crisis sort of subsides we forget about it,” he told Joy News’ Evans Mensah.

The Upper East Regional Town of Bawku has for the past two years suffered from a recurring violence which has claimed dozens of lives and ruined thousands of properties.

The last of that violence which was triggered Sunday has claimed three lives and injured seven.

But Dr. Annin who is head of the conflict resolution department of the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping (KAIPTC)said he has the solution to the Bawku jaundice.

Asked to provide a blue print to solving it, Dr. Annin was blunt; “Tell the president to appoint me to solve it for him.”

“I mean it, why not” he insisted, when his interviewer burst into laughter, apparently surprised with the response.

Dr, Annin admits he is not the only panacea to the canker but said “I can make a contribution” to bring lasting peace to Bawku.

“I have just been appointed by the Secretary General to go round to Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Mauritania to try to help the UN to understand the dynamics of trafficking and terrorism,” he touted.

He said he needs the mandate of the president in order to provide a comprehensive short term solution to the crisis in Bawku.

He said there is the tendency for the nation to look at “superficial results” and described as “naïve and incompetent” the advisors to the powers that be in this country.

He accused some politicians of tapping into his expertise only when they are in opposition but once in power they turn their backs on him.

It is “morally improper” he said for academics to keep knocking on the doors of politicians before making an input into development in the country.
