Tamale Polytechnic admits 2,291 new students

By on Tuesday, 10th November 2009

The Tamale Polytechnic has admitted 2,291 fresh students out of a total of 2,544 applicants for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The students admitted would be pursuing Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in accounting, mechanical engineering, building technology, marketing and purchasing and supply among others.

Dr. Kheni Nongiba Alkanam, Acting Rector of the Polytechnic, annuonced this at the 15th Marticulation ceremony of the institution in Tamale on Sartuday.

He said the Polytechnic had introduced new HND programmes in automobile engineering, marketing and secretaryship and management studies.

Other courses include statistics and purchasing and supply.

Dr. Alkanam said the polytechnic had recruited additional staff but noted that this had come with its own problems since salaries of the staff could no longer be paid from the coffers of the Polytechnic but by the government.

He said because of the low remuneration in the Polytechnics, most of the staff had left for the universities or other greener pastures and appealed to government to improve the conditions of service in the Polytechnic.

The Acting Rector said the Polytechnic was also facing accommodation problems at both the residential and office level and urged contractors working on some of the projects in the school to speed up work.

He said the GETfund had allocated substantial amounts for the construction of an administrative block and some staff flats and hoped they would be soon completed.

Dr. Alkanam advised the fresh students to take their studies seriuosly and also obey the rules and regulations of the Polytechnic.
