MP Crashes Into Speaker’s car

By on Wednesday, 11th November 2009

Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the Member of Parliament who rammed his car into that of the Speaker of Parliament Tuesday morning grossly violated road traffic regulations.

According to the Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Daniel Julius Avorga, before the accident, the National Democratic Congress MP for New Edubiase in the Ashanti Region, Ernest Kofi Yakah, had flouted several road safety regulations.

“The law is very clear that anybody who [hears the sound of a siren but] fails to park off the road and stop commits an offence, and when the person is convicted the minimum penalty is 25 penalty units under law 761 and the maximum penalty can be 200 penalty units plus even a confinement for three months in prison.” He told Joy News in an interview.

The Speaker, Mrs Joyce Bamford Addo, was on her way to Parliament in a motorcade for the business of the House when the incident occurred at the Ako Adjei interchange near the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Accra.

According to the Daily Guide report, the New Edubiase MP attempted to avoid hitting another vehicle in front of him when he heard a siren from the Speaker’s convoy, and in the process, he bumped into the brand new official vehicle of the third most important personality of the land.

ACP Daniel Aorga noted that by the police preliminary investigations, the MP has “no rational explanation for what happened”.

Even though the Commander said Mr Yakah would be made to face the full riguors of the law once investigations indict him, the case may not travel far because of his status.

“There are a lot of implications when MPs are sitting, so I don’t want to conjecture into what eventually is going to happen,” Mr Aorga said.
