Poisoned Rice From Harbour To Be Destroyed

The National Security Council (NSC) has ordered the destruction of the imported unwholesome rice impounded by the police at a mill at Akuse.

The decision was taken at a meeting with key government institutions that man checks at the Tema Harbour.

The Times on Thursday reported that the customs, excise and preventive Service (CEPS), sold the paddy rice to a private company although it knew that the consignment was unwholesome.

The paper’s sources at the NSC indicated yesterday that the council directed that the whole consignment be destroyed under the supervision of the Food and Drugs Board (FDB)

The date for the destruction was, however not concluded at the meeting.

Meanwhile, four persons arrested in connection with the attempted milling of the rice have been granted bail by the Krobo Odumase Circuit Court.

The accused who first appeared before the court on November 4, were remanded and appeared again on November 11, when they were granted bail.
