The Northern Regional capital, Tamale, is hosting about 5,000 visitors, including members of the Diplomatic Corps, Ministers of State, parliamentarians, directors of Agriculture, award winners, farmers and the media for the 25th National Farmers Day celebration at the Jubilee Park.
The Farmers’ day celebration which started some twenty five years ago, is meant to acknowledge and reward farmers and fishermen for their role in national development.
About 65 farmers and fishermen are expected to receive various categories of awards this year.
It is just prudent that government put in more motivation to encourage farmers especially the youth to take the sector as a major employment opportunity as government has chosen to pursue agriculture to drive the economy of the country.
The President Mills led government, just after assuming the reign of
governance, promised to improve agriculture tremendously especially in the three northern regions to improve socio-economic development in those areas in partucular and the country as in general.
Areas with specific focus according to the government include irrigation
farming in rice production, soghum, maize, soya bean, with poultry receiving special attention as well.
This has led to the renovation of some dams and other interventions in the agriculture sector such as provision of tractors, improved seeds, fertilizers among others.
Today’s celebration is expected to afford government the opportunity to announce more plans in the sector especially in mechanised agriculture.
