Forced Evacuations For Traders In Accra

By on Thursday, 17th December 2009

Traders at Danquah Circle in Accra had their wooden structures, containers and wares destroyed on Tuesday by bulldozers after several warnings to evacuate went unheeded.

The demolition exercise was not carried out by the AMA, but by area landlord, Mr. Akyem Owusu Darkwah, together with armed police personnel at dawn.

The landlord told Joy News’ Cyrus De-graft Johnson he had given eviction notices to the ’squatters’ for over a year, but they had showed no signs of leaving.

He said the traders never paid him any rent money and were operating as squatters.

Tuesday’s demolition follows a circuit court order secured by Mr Darkwah to undertake the exercise.

Mr. Darkwah says he will begin the construction of a legal and agricultural research centre for Africa now that the area has been vacated.

Until the demolition, the traders dealt in foodstuffs, provisions and other personal effects, DeGraft Johnson confirmed.

Some of the traders confirmed receiving eviction notices, but still expressed surprise over Tuesday’s action.

“They gave them warning already but unfortunately they came around 4:30 am and they started destroying. Sometimes they used to come and write but they refuse to come, but this time they came,” an eyewitness told Joy News
