Eastern Regional Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, is proposing the study of the ideas and vision of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, in schools, from the basic to the tertiary level.
Dr Kwame Nkrumah was not just the first President of Ghana but a very extraordinary man whose life and works contributed significantly to changing the world.
“You see before you — in all its majesty, strength and power — the Akosombo Dam, 463 feet from the lowest foundations, and 2,200 feet long, which has tamed the turbulent waters of the Volta, turning them into the beautiful vast lake which will ultimately cover over three per cent of the surface area of our country.”
Sixty-Three years may not be too long a life, but at that age, Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, leaves a bold footprint on the sands of time. His life is a cocktail of myth, vision, selflessness, hardwork and ambition.
Hundreds of people from across Africa, America, Europe, Asia, The Caribbean, Pacific and other parts of the world are trooping down to Ghana to celebrate the centenary birthday of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, which falls on Monday, September 21, 2009.
From the beginning Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, and Founder stated his vision and objectives succinctly at the Old Polo Grounds on March 6, 1957 that Ghana’s independence was meaningless unless it was linked with the total liberation of the African continent.
Nkrumah did not alone compose the classical sonata and constitute the orchestra which sang Ghana’s clarion call to independence in sweet melody, all in two months! The fathers of the nation were there already. They included Paa Grant, J.B. Danquah, Akufo-Addo, Ako Adjei, Obetsebi Lamptey and William Ofori-Atta.
The world's tallest man — who also has the largest hands and feet — has been named by Guinness World Records for the launch of its 2010 book.
Far from remaining crucified, incinerated and consigned into the darkest bowls of history, Kwame Nkrumah continues to blaze out with a brilliance that has dazed and discomfited those who swore and relentlessly schemed to destroy him and bury his name and his monumental achievements.
This coming Monday, it will be a hundred years since Nkrumah was born. So many years after his birth, the Osagyefo excites more passion and disagreement, by far, than any of his contemporaries.
